I ma considering replacing my stock 1985 windshield when I have the car painted next month, but I wonder if the new version are decent quality and @ how much do they cost?
Windshields are the same except ZR1. ZR1 start off the same then they get a micro-metalic coating (Sun screen ) except for the radar detector hole because LT5s took up so much room the AC compressor was diminutive.
I have never had one replaced, but from everything I have read on here you want to make sure the installer has done a C4 before.
I have read some "horror stories" on this, so do some searching and read all you can.
Replacing a C4 windshield isn't anything like on a newer car.
I think some of the molding is either really expensive or is no longer available.
So, the installer has to know what he's doing to keep from ruining it.
Do it all the time. Call around several shops for a price, but they all get them from the same warehouse (no matter what they say). You are probably going to need the A pillar weatherstrip, it a lot cheaper if you get it rather than pay the windshield guy for it. You can also take off the trim yourself, it's fairly easy especially if it's had a windshield replacement before. I'm getting C4's for about $150 installed, C5's for $200.
Lots of shops won't do them because of the flimsy side and top moldings. My 87 w/s cracked and only one guy would do it. He actually pulled it down and out from the bottom and then reinstalled the new one. $225.
