Default 84...POOR brakes

I have an 84....the brakes have been poor since I got it. It always made me nervous so I left more stopping distance room than normal......and had someone cut in to the big opening i left.

I had the brakes checked and found the pads were close to being in need of changing. I switched to ceramics, and had rotors turned. It helped a bunch....still not right.....master started to leak bad so got a NEW (not rebuilt) one. Not much change. I have tried several times, and it is NOT POSSIBLE to lock up the brakes. It still doesnt stop like it should....what should I check next??

You need more pressure to lock them up - either start working out or buy a bigger (after market) master cylinder. When was the last time your brake lines where changed? maybe invest in some braided lines as well. If you did the pads and rotors already then do the lines and new master cylinder. Make sure there isn't any AIR in your system, sounds like that is your most likely problem right now. Get you brakes bled by a professional and see if it makes a difference...

Is it REALLY necessary to go to a Corvettes Only place for a brake booster??? Just asking???? Wouldnt a Brake shop be able to handle it?? There is a Corvettes Only shop in Jupiter, and I have used them for my Crossfire issues.....EXCELLENT WORK.....labor rate $125/hour. Dont mind so much for a techincal issue like crossfire problems, but brakes???

A reputable mechanic can help.
Stay away from Oil change, Brake and Tires shops.

Fixed my "Hard Brake Pedal" Shocking cause!

You may have a problem if your booster looks like this

Brake fluid was changes out and flushed when the master cylander was replaced. I checked with a flashlight and cant see and wetness on the booster. I guess I will take it to the Corvettes Only place since there seems to be a low opinion of the brake shops. Thanks for the input everyone ! !

I had crappy brakes on my 85. Switched to aggressive brake pads. Problem solved. I'm using Hawk HP+. Brake dust is pretty bad with them though. But I would recommend checking the booster first.

Get heavy duty brake pads with lots of metal !
When i got my vette and it was standard you could stand on the brakes and not lock them up.
I changed to a heavy duty type brake pad problem solved instantly !
You need friction to stop !!!!!!!

I have replaced my booster with a brand new one recently, was in a hurry but regret getting the plastic one cause i know when it leaks they will refuse to repair it. Apparently every second plastic one breaks when they try to open them . i have 2 leaking ones somewhere in the garage. I recommend the metal type if you can get your hands on one

I checked the booster as per the instructions given......seems to be fine.....I did notice the disks seem to be SUPER SMOOTH ! ! Is it possible the rotors and pads are glazed already after only 2000 miles since the ceramic pad were installed and rotors turned??

If the master cylinder is new and the booster is good and with new pads and rotors, you most likely have air in the system. Hopefully the new master cylinder was bench bled before it was installed. I would bleed all four corners after a brake fluid flush. What does the fluid look like in the master now? Is it clear or discolored?

Also, replace the brake lines at all four corners. Stainless lines will give a harder pedal feel and improve braking. A set is inexpensive at $100 too and you can install them before bleeding.

I have NO CLUE if the new master was bench bled or not......Is this a MUST DO to do it properly?? It was replaced at a brake specialist place. The fluid is a gorgeous golden color...lol......compared to the coffee that used to be in it......Im concerned the rotors are smooth as glass so early....would air in the system cause it to glaze up because its not working properly????
