I have an 85 and mine DO work. When you put the car in reverse, they light up. Really nice when you are backing out of a crowded parking lot. Gives you a bit more visibility as well as lighting up things like curbs and such.

If the switch on the shifter is not adjusted correctly they might not be lighting when you go into reverse. Mine would only light up when the shift lever was pushed forward while in reverse.
