A question please, My 84s engine fan has been direct wired by the previous owner. He said it kept burning the relay/switch out so he direct wired it. Where is this switch located? and are there any thoughts on why the relay/switch would do that? Right now it runs as soon as the ignition is turned on and stays on the whole time my car is running.

On my '88 the main fan relay is located on the LH inner fender well below the MB cylinder.
It is controlled by the ECM and receives fan drive power through a connector & fusable link directly from the batt + terminal.
I have an '85 Vette FSM and it shows similar setup for the coolant fan.
Do you have a booster fan in front of the radiator?
BTW, check that the hi-pressure switch in the A/C pressure line is plugged in; when I want my fan to run all the time (like at the drag strip) I simply unplug this switch connector.

Your model was the last year to have a mech switch in the head for fan control ; as stated above later years control was from the ECM
Switch for fan should be in pass side head ; unit in drv side head should be for the temp gauge
Need to trace wiring from fan motor to see how exactly it has been rewired;normal procedure would be to leave
the stock relay in place and ground it permanently so it passes power to the fan motor as soon as key turn on
