I love the C4. I've had mine for almost five years and I am still amazed at how tough they look, especially when you've got some fat tires in the back. I fell in love with the C4 when my dad ( 81C3 ) Bought his 92 ZR-1, just a beautiful lookin car. Just like my women, I don't like it unless it has some curves to it unlike the C6, IMO that car looks too plain. On the other hand, I think one of the best Corvette's ever built was the C5 Zo6, that car is a monster.
I love my current 86, low miles and very few problems. Lots of looks. My 1st was an 86 vert. also with very few miles. I drove it 6 months and got what I paid for it. It is not easy in these parts to find a good c5 for the same price.
sorry L98 guys. Best truck motor ever built the L98.
Wow you got 50hp on us. You think you got low end torque? Try that truck motor you were just talking crap about. I also get 30 mpg highway. Great cars though both.
You guys took that the wrong way. I'm not knocking the L98 at all. The LT1 has a very flat BROAD torque band basically from idle to Redline. The L98 runs out of steam at 4500. Below that its a monster of a torque (truck) motor.
High end HP and Torque are lacking the L98, compared to the LT1, this is fact. Not a knock on the L98 just facts.
They did not put them in trucks. Just an expression, truck engines usually have low revs, and lots of torque.
@Leftoverture, My LT1 is stock. So....
Yeah, not knocking the L98 at all. It is held back by its (cool looking) induction system. A mini-ram and some decent heads=lots of HP. Its a small block chevy!! Just in stock trim it is limited to what you can do with its induction and head design.
My friend has a 62. No seat belts. It's a scary car.
I do like seat belts
I don't like the smell of carburated cars nor the smell of ethenol laced gasoline boiling out of a carb. I remember as a teenager I liked the smell of gasoline and exhaust.
I'd just like to point out that a 1962 should have seat belts. My '58 does.
My '58 also does not smell like gas, ever.
And while it would never in a million years be as comfortable as a C4, the addition of vintage design wide white wall radials felt like I improved the technology 30 years worth.
I like the styling, seating (WAY better than my C5 had!), steering feel (might swap to a Z51 rack later this year), and the color of my current one means I never lose it in a parking lot.
The clamshell hood is always a favorite. Guys thought I was crazy going "backwards" to a C4, but I'm very happy with it. Women liked the look of the C5 much more, but I don't drive a car to pick up chicks, so that doesn't matter.
I love everything about my C4: it feels like a cockpit in a fighter plane, handles like a boss, it's fast, comfortable seats, eye catching. I turn around and look at it every time I get out!
A friend who is a car guy but tends to like only older stuff was looking at my clean low mileage 89 coupe with some distain the other day…and he says to me “it’s clean and nice but I think it’s ugly and the newer ones have the LS motor, why did you buy that?”
So I thought about it a bit and the short answer was that I wanted a Corvette and this is what I could afford to pay cash for at the time. Which is true. If I could have swung a 1970 454 convertible like my dad used to own when I was a kid, or maybe a cherry 82 collector’s edition or a C5 Z06, hell even a 96 LT4 etc etc I probably would have. And I may in the future. I’d like one of each year to tell the truth not to mention plenty of non-Corvette cars I would like to own but back to the point…I told him
1. Look at the clamshell hood – this is one of my favorite features of the C4. I showed him how cool it was and how easily you could access the motor..he agreed it was awesome.
2. Look at the front a-arms.. forged aluminum pieces or art. The entire suspension system is first class even by today’s standards. Rear IRS, 4 wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, bilstein shocks, you get the idea. This one even has the performance axle ratio and Borla cat back exhaust. – He agreed on this too. Mentioned that one of the 55 Chevy show cars he is building is being outfitted for C4 suspension front and rear because it works great and is beautiful to boot.
3. Small block Chevy. Yep the one you know and love. Not too shabby either with aluminum heads, roller cam, port fuel injection. Essentially a ZZ4 crate motor with a milder cam and restrictive intake.
4. Transmission had overdrive and is relatively modern. Yet it’s very conventional. Independent shops in the area can fix it for reasonable $$. No rear placement transaxle here. Could have a had a six speed too. Nothing against a C5/6. Sometimes simpler is just preferable for some of us.
5. Aluminum space frame, SMG body panels, all creature comforts…
For Six grand. You go find me a better deal. Find me a “cooler” car for six grand. (I realize this is subjective). Find me a car capable of .9g’s, 150+ mph, high 13 sec ¼ mile (all under best circumstances but still). Oh and it needs to be road trip worthy and have heat/air etc. If you could find a better deal, chances are it’s on another C4
Oh and people still say stupid sh*t like “you must have got a good bonus” etc. Over a 6k car…while they are driving stuff that costs a lot more.
Hell I paid more $$ - a lot more, for my wife’s Ford Flex and nobody says anything about that.
Whether or not this “perceived value” is an asset or a liability depends on how you look at it but either way I’ll bet I don’t lose money on my C4.
Aaaaah, the young and the young-at-heart Now here in retirementville, it is just a bit diff........the "birdies" (not chicks) are out for a nurse or a purse so: the C-4 takes some movement to get into and exit--agility And, it looks good. I have gotten comments about her (my car) looks like new (it's the paint and the shape).
Love the "shark" look styling and she has a beautiful rear end. She may not be brand new but she fools alot of people.
Amenities: "Caddy" lighting, turning, dimming, and actually not theatre lighting delay, but delay. Electric locks, abs, security and somewhere I read on this site--star-wars dash lighting/display.
Because I fell in love with the 84 when it came out because:
1. The clamshell hood
2. The Atari star wars dash
3. The exposed tires and front suspension
and
4. It was my dads and is a living legacy of him since he passed away. Everytime I look at it, it reminds me of dad. Everyday when I go to work and walk by her, his mistress (the Vette) reminds me of him and taunts me to drive her.
One thing that I really like that hasn't been said yet is having the gas filler in the middle. Pull into a gas station, pick any pump and pull on either side.
I love everything about my C4: it feels like a cockpit in a fighter plane, handles like a boss, it's fast, comfortable seats, eye catching. I turn around and look at it every time I get out!
I love the way the 90-93 interior just wraps around you.
I've let a few people auto-x my 93, and they loved the seats, cinch feature on the belts.
They even commented that while it is a big car (for a sports car) from the "cockpit" it drives and feels like a much smaller car.
They wanted a F14 for the street, they got it!!!
Random factiod: During the early phases of the C4 design/engineering GM was using Grumman Air Craft Corp. Cray computer for design work,etc...They got invited to check out the then new F14 Tomcat.
Where do you think the sleek, purposeful, fast going still, shape came from. The LCD readouts,etc....
They where inspired by the F14 Tomcat. Anyone got "Danger Zone" and images of Top Gun in their minds?
