Default '90 Delco Bose Stereo Problem

I am original owner of 1990 Corvette convertible with the Delco Bose Gold stereo system. Since purchase, I put the car away in the garage for 3 months during winter. Everything was fine for 5 or 6 years. Then one spring, I noticed that the left-front speaker had no sound. This continued for the next three years until all speakers (one at a time) had no sound. From internet research, I knew it was the amplifiers but I didn't do anything about it; car was driven only a couple hundered miles per year and wasn't that important.

I just had all four Bose amplifiers restored by Doctor Don's (excellent service). After installing the speaker/amp assemblies, I turned the radio on. The power antenna goes up and down properly, the radio plays (speakers sound very good) and all radio controls work. However, the CD player will not draw the disc into the mechanism and the cassette player will not accept tapes. Both the CD player and the cassette player worked before the last speaker blew.

It's hard for me to imagine that both CD and cassette players would fail from just sitting unused even if it has been 10 or so years. From other threads, it seems that are are several excellent aftermarket stereo systems available. However, with just 7, 100 miles, originallity is important. I would appreciate any input/suggestions you might have about this problem.

If you want to keep it original take the radio out and send it to Dr. Don

First I have to say, start driving the car, and enjoying the car, it was made to be driven.
The second thing, if you want to keep the cars original post this in the

in this part of the forum. If you are good at taking things part try try this web site, and you can call up to ask all the questions you need to upgrade the radion for IPOD, and maybe NAV system, they are very knowledgeable.

Last but least find good place that installed custom radios, with all the toys you will possible need.
Good luck, and drive the car, it's summer now, what is your excuse.

You may want to consider swapping out the head unit and CDM and installing a double din aftermarket radio. Since you have already invested in rebuilding the amps, I suggest that you leave the existing amps and speakers in place (you wont have to tear out the existing wiring to make the swap). I did this on my 90 and my son's 91 and the radio works and sounds great. I bought the radio from BestBuy and had them do the installation. With respect to originality, you may find their warranty useful as they will reinstall the original radio free whenever you want. You will need to pick up a few things that BestBuy doesn't have on the shelf to do the install. All are available from Crutchfield or Amazon. Best part is that the cost of the install (if you buy the radio from BestBuy) should only be around $125. I went with a double din JVC unit that has front and back USB inputs and bluetooth so I can play the tunes on my Iphone wirelessly or from a thumb drive. Here are the parts you will need to make the swap:
Metra Chevrolet Corvette 1990-1996 Turbo Pocket Kit - Metra 993051;
Bose adapter harness (Metra 70-1857 Tuner Relocation and Bose Integration Harness for Select GM Vehicles) and two PAC SNI-1 Noise Isolators (unless you like to hear the subtle "whine" of engine electronics).
