How do you ship a differential?

First, make sure it is completely drained, I've seen them leak and it destroys other packages in the truck.
Box it up in a proper box, use a lot of packing material. Don't use newspaper or peanuts. Wrap the rear in a plastic bag and get rigid foam or use that expandable foam from a can. You don't want any movement at all.
Once you have it packed, place it on the floor and roll it over a couple times. Does it feel lopsided? Did it flip too easily, if it did, repack so it won't flip over as easily.
Chances are it will get dropped, so you want to make sure it's protected on the bottom as well as the sides and top.
Place an address label inside the box as well as attaching one to th erear itself. This way if the box breaks open, UPS can still send it on it's way. If you don't, someone else ends up with a nice cheap rear.
MAke sure you insure it for the proper amount. The 1st $100 is free, and it's 35 cents for each additional $100. Pretty cheap.
Expect to pay a little extra due to the weight, you may even get charged for irregular handling.
People have sent auto parts like this in the past and have had no problem.
If you can find yourself a plastic crate that the automotive guys use, get one and use the packing tips I gave above.
Good Luck!
