Default Motor Question

The TPI Throttle Body Cover Plate on my 1996 CE says Grand Sport. The VIN # comes back to a LT1 motor. The car is a silver convert. From what I have read all Grand Sport in 96 were blue with the racing stripe..I suspect that someone put a different TPI Throttle Body Cover Plate on it, but I know the motor could have been changed at some point over the years.. is there any way to tell exactly what motor is in it? Thanks .

Should be an LT1, but if you think it may be a LT4 and want to know for sure then just remove the valve cover on one side and see if you have stamped steel or roller rockers. Roller rockers are on LT4's.

Your '96 automatic came with the LT1 engine.
All '96 manual trasmission cars came with the LT4 engine.

All LT4 engines had that "Grand Sport" throttle body plate.
But it is just a cover plate, and nothing would prevent someone from putting the LT4 plate on the LT1 engine.

I know it has been done before, and I "think" a member here did this with a CE car.
It sure wouldn't be the first automatic behind an LT4 engine.

Another thing to look at, is to take the oil filler cap off the passenger valve cover.
Shine a flashlight in the hole and if they are LT4 heads, you'll see "LT4" embossed on the head.

Of course the actual engine numbers would tell you too, but I don't know how to decode them.

It's a LT1, I looked under the valve cover and the rocker arms are not roller rockers and didn't see LT4 Stamped anywhere.. Thanks for all of the info, now on to the next thing.

Just the gasket. I just realized I never got back to you. I looked and all I have is a TPI and an LT4 plate.
