Default shift boot

Has anyone changed the shift boot on a 1996 automatic?

Unless something drastically changed it should be the same as my 91.
Chock the wheels, move the gear selector to "N" . With a small screwdriver pry out the shift button, it should come straight up. then remove the cir clip and the **** will come off. open the cup holder and remove the small bolt in the front holder (I think), then open the console door and remove the two small bolts holding the trim plate down. Slide the trim plate back and up. From underneath remove the hatch release connectors, the cigar lighter, and the small light bulb that lights up the gear selector. Pull the panel off and underneath you will see the screws holding the boot on. Be careful with those tabs the plastic gets brittle and can break easily, ask me how I know. While you are in there it's a good time to take apart the selctor plate and clean it up, it will look sharp the next time you turn on your lights at night. Remember to fit the orange selector pin back over the gear selector when you reassemble or you will not know what gear you are in and will have to take everthing back apart . Good luck and welcome to the fray.
