I have the Magnaflow Cat Back system that I ordered from Mid America. It looks great, has just the right sound at all times and does not have a drone problem. The guys in my club think they compare favorably to the Borla and Corsa systems.
Do know what type/brand the straight thru type were?
I'm thinking about fitting muffler eliminators to my 88, but I'm wondering if and how bad the drone might be?

My friend had this setup:
1. Gutted Cats .. fully gutted, taken off, top of cats cut open with torch, internals removed, tops rewelded on, they essentially just became collectors but passed the visual inspection.
2. H - pipe equalizer
3. Mufflers deleted
4. Factory tips retained.
It sounded good going down the road, you'd never know it was a muffler delete car .. on de-celeration it would pop and crackle a little on occasion, not every time.. ... like an old pickup with glasspaks on de-cel.. the rest of the time it was very Muscle Car.
Drone? .. I couldn't tell you, I was 25 when I was around this set up and didn't give a #### about drone. Muffler delete is a solid option.

I put 3" Hooker Aerochambers on mine. Nice sound, not loud. They do drone under 1900 rpm.
I believe that the only mufflers that don't drone have oval cases. Mufflers with flat cases (Flowmasters, Aerochambers, etc.) set up harmonic resonances that project up into the body, and project down which then reverberate off the ground back up into the car.
That's my theory, anyway.....

The drone is where you you tend to drive at mostly, 35, 50, even 60 mph at a steady speed with slight throttle application.
They were a plain aftermarket brand you could see straight thru the muffler from the inlet to the outlet, she would rattle the windows of the house idling. I always got comments on how great my vette sounded a deep rumble no European bark just a proper hot V8 sound, i do miss the idle and the roar of acceleration but NOT the drone.
I've played with my vette long enough to know that there are a lot of factors involved with the drone. I believe Rocco is right about the flat sided mufflers being prone to drone. I have under-carpet sound deadening, under body sound deadening, and a resonator delete. I love the sound but the drone from my 3 chamber Flowmasters is horrible at certain speeds.
I have those dynomax super turbos, and they sound GREAT with the main cat replaced with a test pipe - deep rumble, no drone, and no lean pop. I used to just swap in a cat for emission tests before I became exempt, but it's not a daily driver.
