engine replacement estimate
Replace it with what? New or rebuilt? You don't have to lift a finger? May be worth it?

Don't need a warranty when you build your own, and do it right.
Bored .030 over, Keith Black 10.5 to 1 forged pistons, Steel Crank, pink rods,
Line Bored the mains, cl77 bearings, 3 angle manley valves 2.02, General Kinetics mid range cam 454lift 272 duration . Pete Jackson Gears Quiet
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head.
I did waste a bunch of money on exhaust Manifold gaskets, kept blowing them until I got smart and didnt use any.
Free labor built and installed myself.
Hope that helps.
Gm crate I seen recenty was $2,300 list.

The problem with the Gm motor is that it has to be installed by a certified GM Tech in order that the warrenty be honored! I have already check GM 4 engine, Jasper offers a 3 year 100,000 mile warrenty. This engine would be complete to just be place in vette. Two days of labor and you are out the garage door!
I value my time and could be doing something more valuble that I KNOW HOW TO DO while the expects do their job. Also they have the garage and tools in order to complete the job!
I will be getting at least 3 quotes as I have put them out for bid..........Thanks for your reply

GM no longer sells an exact replacement motor for the 85. The Target motor is set up for a carb and you would need to swap out the cam, although I'm told the computer will still work with the cam that it comes with. Also, I believe it does not use the 2 piece seal. I did find this shop in Texas that will build a long block to your specs and the cost was very reasonable, less than $1400 which included shipping. The Jasper motor, I think, was going for something close to $2500 last time I checked. My buddy swears by them and he used to be an authorized dealer and installer before he closed his shop.
As long as you're getting a warranty and you can trust the shop not to butcher your car, the estimate you got was on point IMO for a stock rebuild or replacement. Keep in mind, they probably did not include additional parts that may need once they get into it, like water pump, distributor, etc. I would budget $4000 for the rebuild.

Our shop uses Jasper engines and transmissions for all engine replacement jobs we do. The nice thing about using Jasper is that the engine long block comes completely assembled so all the tech has to do is remove the old engine from the car, transfer the accessories to the Jasper engine and install it in the car. Once the customer's car is at the shop, Jasper typically delivers by the next working day and the swap is done in about a day depending on the car make and model.
