I have a 86 coupe. I am having a hard time also because, I am trying to paint a piece to cover the bread box. The other two dash pieces are fine. I must have bought 7-8 different types of paint. I was told that SEM is the best. I don't know. I am going to buy some tomorrow. I hope it works.
Years, ago I bought some paint to change the color of the seats in an old jeep of mine..I think it was called vinyl color..I was surprised that it worked ,It lasted a long time before it started to flake off...You may also be able to use contact paper if you can find it in black..I've never looked for it,but I'd say they sell it....Good Luck

One place you can go is The Paint Store. It is an online paint retailer that sells all kinds of specialty paint. Not cheap.
At first I thought you meant that you were going to paint the dash pad. I did this on my 87 and used vinyl trim paint to match my tan interior. B I G mistake! I had to go back to flat enamel as the lighter color reflected in the windshield and made it almost impossible to see in certian light conditions.
Try plasti dip. I haven't used it yet but I'm going to give it a try. Their was a thread on here not too long ago where the guy did his interior pieces in it and looked really good. I think he did the wheel wells n under the hood. Don't kno how it work or lasts but it's worth a try.
