Default Targa question

i understand theres three different targas out there for c4's the first is for 84-85 or something then 86-88 and then 89-96

the main difference being the distances the holes for the bolts sit at. now heres my question..... how do i measure the distance of the bolt? my car was sold to me by a dealer as an 88 but i believe its an 89 after decoding the vin on the rpo sticker but my vin on the car is restamped due to the car being stolen before and i can't really prove if the cars an 88 or 89. well since theres two targa possibilities i have to measure the thread distances in order to get the right targa for my car as the one i have right now has started to crack. i don't want to end up ordering a targa for an 89 when i really need the 88 model.

thanks in advance

I bumped into a guy in a Chevy dealership yesterday who was wrestling with the parts department because the spacing on the unit they sold him was wrong. I'd assume the center-to-center distance across the front and rear is what you'll need to know, but there may be variations on bolt sizing. Anybody know for sure?

nope i don't think its center to center cuz the distances i've been told are like 2-3 inches i think its the distance from the center of the bolt to the lil circular indents next to each of the front bolt fastners.

i just was looking at replacement tops at ecklers and they have little diagrams of what the front bolt patterns should look like guess i'll have to take off the targa and remember what they look like.

I thought it was
84-86 E, 86L-89, 90-96 styles

i know the 86E is 4 9/16" from the sunvisor pin to roof panel mounting bolt
while 86L-89 is 2 3/4"

I have an 85 and a 93 and a top that will not fit any of my cars. The early top has a strange set up not close to the later tops. Looks like the mid year tops had more distance between the bolts on the sides of the hole for your top screw (in the front) 89-96 these are close together. I would think you could make a 89 to 96 fit the mid years but could not go the other way.

Look on the underside of your armrest and also in your storage bin areas behind the seat...you might see if you can still see the printed sticker on the door. Any of these areas are possibilities to get your original VIN from...that should help you figure it out...

yup i have decoded the rpo sticker on my car and the vin shows the car as being an 89 but sometimes i am skeptical cuz what if the console lid was replaced from another car? but yeah i guess i should stop worrying and consider my car an 89 because i decoded all the codes and they match every option my car has.

alright well i've gotta find myself a targa for my 89 i'd like to find a blue one. any leads??? i tried ebay all i found was a solid one which i will probably buy anyways just for the heck of it.

There is a diagram in ecklers catalog of the bolt pattern on the top. Match that to the top on there now and that should tell you. Good Luck, Guy
