Painting my car 1987 questions.
hi everyone
I am restoring my car and am sanding down the old
paint with my orbital sander and 80 grit discs. I have never
painted a fiberglass car before. On metal bodies I take it down
to metal and use etching primer usually to start off with.
My car is factory yellow, at this point i am sanding and I
see where the clear is slowly being removed and then I sand
a little through the base coat. In some areas I see primer.
Once I remove the clear and sand the base coat a little I then
plan to use 250 grit by hand to smooth everything out and remove
any tiny scratches, although my orbital sander even with 80 grit
appears not to leave any.
After cleaning the body well I then plan to shoot some primer,
block and wet sand that well and then use an acrylic urethane
base coat followed by 3 coats of clear. After a week I then plan
to color sand wet with 1600 grit followed by 2000 grit.
Forot to mention that I will use a primer compatible with acrylic
urethane.
Would anyone here do anything different or maybe offer some
suggestions.
Slowly but surely I am bringing my baby back to life.

Whatever you do DON'T use a single stage acrylic urethane with clear already in it. If you color sand it you will HAVE to clear over it!! otherwise it will fade quickly in the sun.
Use a 2k base coat clear coat ppg shopline or better quality paint it's worth it!
Use only fiberglass compatible supplies especially like evercoat rage made for fiberglass it will adhere to the body panels best, there are 2 types one for smc and one not for smc depends on which panels you are working on.
Others with more experience on vettes will chime in, also check out the paint section of the forum and ask your local paint supplier.
