Default 1992 DERM removal (Shift Control Cable)

I am in the process of replacing the Shift Control Cable on my 1992. I am to the almost last step in the service manual that says:

Section 8C INSTRUMENT PANEL, GAGES AND CONSOLE
Page 8C-38
Remove or Disconnect
3. Inflatable restraint wiring harness to DERM Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and connector from DERM
4. DERM from vehicle

I have been unable to remove the connectors because I can hardly see, let along touch, the connectors. I need to remove the DERM to get to the grommet that allows the cable to pass through the transmission tunnel.

Has anyone performed this operation that can offer a suggestion on how to do this? I am concerned about pulling on the DERM and damaging the connectors as that would go someplace I do not want to go. It is a very tight fit.
