Any vette that has been sitting for 12 years, especially an 84 that is almost 30 years old will cost you more to get it running than the car is worth! Unless you get it for free! Just my opinion!

If it has some interesting options that would make the price go up. Things like a 4+3 stick, Z-51 suspension, G92 rear axle, low miles, unusual color combos, etc. I'd look carefully at things and make a reasonable offer. Excessive low-balling will just get the door slammed in your face.

We need pics. Also would be great to know the mileage. If it is a low mileage car you may have a find. They are 30 years old now so it could also be some 150,000 mile rat.

it would seem pretty easy to see how fond of the car they are by asking what kind of money they're thinking .... and going from there ...
as stated earlier ... depends on mileage, condition etc .... Then it just depends on what you're willing to invest ....

If it was stored properly, it could make a nice parts car. Things like good rims and body panels are getting a little tougher to find.

A few of the comments here are a little over the top. A car stored for 12 years indoors and not started does not necessarily indicate a car that is going to need a full restoration. There are many factors that affect the deterioration. I have seen cars sit indoors for a decade or more that required no more than fresh fluids, brakes, tires, and cleaning. There will be bugs to work out in all cases but parts car? A bit premature. It's a small block and a 700R4.

Like Bob said, it's all speculation until you go see it. For all you know Grandpa may have been a "Bubba" or he may have treated his car very well, hope it's the second. Let us know what you find.

Yeah, except barns are just marginally better than being outside and I haven't seen a barn yet that wasn't a mouse nesting haven and you can damn well bet that they also discovered the Vette is a great place to nest!

It could be great, or a piece of junk. It was parked 12 years ago, so that means it was driven 19-20 years. As others said, need to know mileage, interior shape etc. IMO if it has 100,000 miles or more, and general wear, etc. It would be less then $2,000 that it would be worth and even at that I would walk away. 12 years of sitting is hard on the fuel system, not to mention the cyl walls etc, if it was not properly prepared to store, ie drain gas, oiled cylinders etc.
Again, IMO the 84 will be worth the least of any year. 1. There were a lot of them made, 2. CFI is generally not desired, 3. If needed interior parts, paint, etc. alone could cost you more then you would be able to sell the car for. 4. Off the bat, you will need tires and a battery, belts, hoses, etc.
Don't make the mistake, as many of us have, buy a c4 as a fixer upper and expect to get your money out of it. Its going to be a long time until the c4 is going to be considered a collectable car. (dollar value wise)
Now let me go as I feel sure I will get flamed for that remark.

I wouldnt touch anything sitting in a barn for that many yrs.

Well maintained finds are a lot more satisfying.

You never know why it was parked. Coule be ready to puke a major mechanical or simply put away due to????

Here's a thought - if you can afford it, and you want it - buy it. I've owned several old cars and trucks and NEVER wondered if I would ever get my money out of it. For me, the project IS the enjoyment. It gives me something to do, other than my job. I see results of my labor, and when it's done, it's mine - the way I want it.

Of course, if you're looking for an investment, cars are never a sure thing.

I've seen people pull cars out of the weeds at junk yards and replace fluids and start them up.

The problem comes in though where rubber seals and parts are concerned. They can and will deteriorate and you'll be finding them for the next 4 years.

i say the offer rests on the overall condition of the car. don't try and start the car, just leave it as is until you get the car home. bring a jumper box or battery charger and maybe bump the key to see if the engine is free. check for rodent infestations (you'll know right away by the smell of the interior) and check for chewed wiring or shielding in the engine bay. check to see if it still has coolant in the radiator and check to make sure there is in fact oil in the pan. at this point i would not be concerned about all of the little things. if it seems that it can be bought and made road worthy and you will be doing the work yourself and enjoying the car, i say to go for it!
