Hello, everyone I have a Corvette c4 1987, I have a lot of trouble with the VSS. I put a new drive gear, driven gear, sensor, and ecm. The speed used to jump but now nothing is showing on the cluster. I plug a computer and the speed is messed up from the ecm.
Please Help
Mine is an 86 and I have changed over to an aftermarket analog gauge system and retofitted a T5 (different VSS) but I have been through the system. The VSS feeds to the gauge cluster first and the cluster feeds the ECM.
Since it seems you have replaced everything else - that would point to the cluster or wiring.
I can shoot a pic of my FSM if you need me to.
Hopefully you replaced the sensor with a 2 pulse square wave sensor. As Gantner said, the signal from the VSS goes to the instrument cluster, and then on to the ECM. If both the speedometer output, and ECM out are intermittent, or clearly not functioning properly the fault is at the cluster.
Post the brand and part number of the VSS that you bought for a replacement. If used mention from where you were told it came from. Maybe a "snapshot"!
You can spin a VSS and generate an AC voltage with a drill or other rotary device, the first check I'd think would be to confirm that one or the other maybe both of the VSS that you have actually generate an AC voltage and at the same rotational RPMs what is the voltage.
