Default MAFsensor test

Is there any way of checking the condition of a MAF sensor OFF the car?
just trying to work my way through the system to track down code 48 on my '94

I don't know about off the car, but hooking up to a scanner can show you if it's working properly or not.... The air flow is measured in Grams and the "Factory Service Manual" will tell you what readings are normal...WW

It is possible to test it off the car but you'd need a lot of electronic technical knowledge to do it. Using a scanner would be a lot easier, as WW7 suggested.

Just for reference: the MAF uses 12 volts as it's power source. The output to the ECM has a 10K pullup resistor to 5 volts inside the ECM. You would have to simulate that pullup resistor somehow. Then you could measure the output signal. It's directly proportional to air flow. Low voltage at low air flow and up to 5 volts at high air flow.

Just checked the data flow at idle, around 750 RPM, and the MAF reading is cycling erratically between 2 and 424 so Im guessing maybe a short in the wiring?

That's not right.... Mine starts around 10 grams at idle and goes up smoothly as the rpms increase.. If it's jumping, it's either a bad MAF or like you said , it could be wiring...The range on stock MAF sensors is 0 to 256 grams if Im remembering right...Could you get a known good maf sensor from someone and see what reading you get with that installed ???...WW

Well, Ive decided to "bite the bullet" and ordered an AC Delco MAF from Rockauto, also a new three wire connector, should come through early next week, what I want to do is replace all three wires right back to their source's to try to rule out any broken wire further up, but what Im not too sure about is if theres any other components before I get to the ECM etc, like relays, that I could renew at the same time, hopefully this should cure it!!

Don't you know another Corvette owner that you can swap maf sensors with for a few minites to see if that's the problem.. If you buy a maf sensor and find out that's not the problem, you can't return it because electronics can't be returned...I would check the wiring first before buying parts, it may turn out to be just the plug or wiring ....WW

What you say makes perfect sense but unfortunately Ive not seen another Vette within 100 miles of here, let alone a 94..so Ive got to do it the hard (expensive)way! at least i'l know its good all through the circuit afterwards
BTW, Is there any other component in the circuit that may have gone bad?
