Default Distributor Install Question

I'm installing the distributor on my 84 and I want to make sure I am installing it correctly. Here are a couple pics of the timing mark and distributor placement in the engine. If I need to change anything, please guide me in the proper direction. Thank you!

As long as it is on compression stroke you should be good to get it fired and break in cam.

You could be at TDC for #6. You need to verify you're really on #1.

The classic method is to take out the #1 spark plug, put your thumb over the spark plug hole and crank the engine by hand. When you feel pressure you're close to TDC. Then you can move the crank until it's right on TDC.

The rotor looks good but the housing is "wrong". Maybe '84s are different, but on my car the 4 wire harness comes out the back directly toward the firewall.

It really doesn't matter how it's installed as long as the firing order is correct. It's easiest to have the power and tach wires on the driver's side, though. It looks like they will be pointed at the firewall. Put the distributor cap on it to see what I mean. There is a notch in the housing and a corresponding "bump" in the cap, so it only goes on one way.

This is my L98, but the idea is the same:

That looks exactly right to me I carefully checked where mine was before I pulled the distributor. I think its kinda funny that the books or instructions say "the rotor should point toward the number one cylinder" usually that is understood as the rotor should point to where the number one wire is attached both are true
