If everything else is in operating order the stat does set the operating temp. why have different temp stats?? going down the road if you have a 160 stat your car will run around 160 180 it will run around 180 190 it will run around 190. a sttat flucates to mainttain it set point. I have taught liquid cooling for over 30 yrs the post I showed eailer came from a Gm manual from the 70's. In my class room we had a running SB chevy on a stand the Tstat housing was clear I would let the students watch as the stat flucates to maintain temp. Now sitting in traffic different story these cars are at the mercy of the fans on and off times
That's correct, Sitting in traffic.LOL. What's funny is my BMW is the opposite of most cars. It has a thermostat with a heating element, that gets energized by the ECM under WOT conditions. SO,the thermo actually opens to its fullest when the car is floored. Yet, it runs hot on the highway and even hotter around town.
That's why I recommend a 180 thermostat, you want the fans on at 195 instead of 226. The point is, the car is going to climb to the point of 226 degrees at some point, until the fan kicks on.

Everyone here needs to figure out if they are talking about a hot summer day or a cold winter day when they are making there statements...There is a difference....They also need to specify if they are talking about running on the highway or moving along in rush hour traffic because this makes a difference also.... We all need to specify what conditions we're talking about.....WW
And we have a winner!!!! Good for you WW7
In addition to the above statement, you also need to consider the "capability" of the system. I say this because if the tstat is actually modulating, during certain ambient temperatures, and the system is capabile of removing more heat, then and only then would a lower stat actually change the temperature of the coolant. Did you see the "conditions" I set up? This might be why thermostat threads get so long and so polar, because many results can be achived based on conditions.

thank you Tom for stating that a stat modulates to maitain the stats set temp. So many people on here think that once a stat opens that is all it does.
do you have to run thermostat? I don't Have aluminum heads with carburetor. Fans run constantly. At idle for 20 min stays at 190-200. On road goes to 235. have good flow thru radiator Live in Fla

You do not have to run a thermostat, but must run a restrictor to slow the flow through the radiator. http://store.jetracinginc.com/wareplkit.html
Otherwise it doesn't stay in the radiator long enough to cool.

thanks i will put one in..another problem maybe u can help. My dash lites up and if i put polarize classes on i can see tach working but no speedo and fuel gauge. I have temp, oil and volts on gauges in ash tray was thinkin of taken dashout and makin custom with tach speed and fuel and getting rid of the nightmare.Good or bad idea?
Cars generally sit at the thermostat temp + 5 deg. or hotter on demand. Just lowering the stat temp isn't as effective as doing it with a chip to take advantage of it with more spark advance. A Hypertec II chip will do this and specifically wants a 160 stat. Did great on my 89. It will on an 87 too. Add an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and you have a nice setup. An extra pound or two on the fuel pressure helps.
I just wanted to double check, I just bought a 1989 stock, wanted to start slow, would adding a chip with a thermostat be a good idea
