I started my '94 6-speed this morning routinely, but when I went to put it into reverse, it refused to engage gear. I applied the parking brake and tried 1st gear. That didn't work. Fearing that I would hurt the clutch and transmission, I turned the engine off, and the car then allowed me to put it into any gear. I re-fired it and everything worked (I drove it and it shifted smoothly through all gears). I called a friend (mechanic) and he said it was unusual for something like that to "fix itself" so quickly, but I might have a loose cable or something connecting the clutch. Has this happened to anyone before? Is there something I can do to prevent this from occurring again?
I believe all C 4s have hydraulic clutch. Check the level of fluid. Maybe air in system. They can be a pain to bleed. I'm sure others will chime in with other possibilities.
Yes, they are twitchy like that, they get a little low and act strange. When I first got my 85, 4+3 when cold, I had trouble shifting 1-2, once warm it was fine, I found the clutch was a little low, maybe 3/4 inch below the top, I topped it off, and all issues went away.
So...just fired it up and it won't engage any gear. Shut it off, it engages all gears. Re-fire it, no gears work. It didn't "fix itself" (shocking!). I'll update this thread when I know more.
Well, seems like something broke suddenly. My clutch fluid is pretty much empty. I didn't see any leaks, but the fluid was fine literally last week. I had the car towed to my mechanic to take a further look at it.
The only thing I can think of is that I had the car at NJ state inspection last Friday, where I'll be honest: they looked like they had no idea how to operate the car. An example is that they kept jamming on the hood to close it. They also stalled the car multiple times. I drove it Sunday, and it was fine, so I thought nothing of it. Now the last two days this has come up.........

just went through this on mine (86 with a Tremec 5 speed). Initial problem was either the clutch master or slave was bad, so had both replaced. Got it back from my mechanic after sitting a couple of weeks, ground trying to get into reverse and unable to get into any forward gear. My mechanic gave up on it so I took a shot at it.
Found this on Youtube and decided to try it:
I got some air out of it, did it multiple times over a few days. Each time it seemed solid at that time but after a few days it started acting up again as if it had some air in it yet.
I work with a guy that is a former GM mechanic and had worked on some Vettes of the same era. His suggestion was to pump the clutch 5 or 6 times, hold it for about 5 minutes and then slip your foot off the clutch so it pops up as fast as possible. I did that 3 times over a couple of days and the clutch seems to be rid of all air and is holding solid and it's been almost a week now since I did it the last time.
That's what I ran into and what was done to fix it. Hope it helps.

I would guess that your slave is leaking. Also check the carpet under the dash, if it's greasy, then you clutch master is leaking.
