Need some more corvette advice !!
went to parts store to order intake manifold gaskets . The guy behind the counter is a chevy motor head . We talked about what I've been up with the vet and that I was replacing manifold gasket . He says that regardless of no evidence of head gasket leak
I should still pull the heads as this motor is known for head gasket problems and since I'm half way there it would be foolish not to . My fear is (not only all the extra work)
that i'll be breaking or stripping exhaust manifold bolts or worse head bolts when I try to remove them .
What do you guys think about this ??? Head gaskets !!!! Car has 45000 sat many yrs .
I am leaking anti freeze on the back of intake have low rpm power issue maybe related
going to do injectors, egr fuel reg while i'm tearing things up .the heads do scare me a bit as I haven't been into a engine that deep for 40 yrs or so
how bad are the bolts going thru all that alumn .

If you got smooth power up to 90 you should be able to rule out fuel pump, injectors, and any other fuel related issue. Your ignition is probably in the clear as well. I also doubt its a vacuum leak or te issue would be consistent. Have you tested the throttle position sensor?

thanks for the advice . I have pulled the plenum and now stuck half way in pulling the rest of the intake .Have to more research tonight also soaking a few stuck bolts . I will take a look at the tps while everything is out but ive had them go on other cars and found that you can find a spot on your throttle where they just seem to have a dead spot didn't see that when I was looking just no low rpm juice . not that won't take a look at it I have heard of them causing strange things on other cars (I think my shop manual tells of a voltage test for it ) But with what i'm seeing under this manifold its a wonder the car even ran . evidence of fuel leaks , and vacuum lines rotting plus large nuts of some kind underneath the plenum . Maybe its a carnivore and eats meat along with gas ??????
I might bring my pistol out to the shop in case what ever put that stuff up there is still lurking in the car !!!might explain some of the noise it makes !I don't want to meet it holding only a just a 10 mm torx
I think I have to replace everything under the plenum with new before putting back together .Its a pita to get this thing off, don't want to do it again .I have ordered new injectors and fuel reg rebuild kit from fic.. might as well replace egr (why did they put that there??/] I'll have to roam for hoses next week seem a lot are unavailable
Anyone use a chiltons for reference ? this shop manual jumps around a lot and I have a hard time following as I work. I will need more references for torque and bolt tightening seq.it lacks a lot of info or just hard to follow i'm told that the blue one is the same as mine red 1986 cv shop man ???? Thank you again for your input I will write what I find as I creep along . I think there is just a lot of little things going on so I took on the manifold leak (big thing)and will go over everything up there then get it running again and do the diagnostics as the book has them . I did have number one injector stick while doing block test .so they suck too . noid light would fire but injector wasn't giving any fuel ,pulling the injector plug made no difference in idle . I tapped it a few times but it wouldn't cooperate and fire . Thanks Sir

Do it often enough and it will grow on you

What is the "blue" one , a manual for all GM cars?
The red C4 FSM is the only one to use and yes you have to learn how to read it correctly

The torque settings are typically listed at the end of each relevant chapter , in the FSM at least

I see a few manuals on eba with a blue cover like a binder cover I was going to buy one but the nappa guy said its the same as mine . .Mine is has a book binding and is red says 1986 corvette shop manual .I have go to a book store to see if Chiltons is better for me .I don't care for Haynes that much but have used them successfully with my other cars .I did find torque for bolts last night in its written on a very small pic of the intake without my 2.0 reading glasses I didn't see the numbers they were so small .
I have a question .this book says I have to remove exhaust manifold to take off valve covers but dosen,t say anything about removing them to get at the lower bolts on the runners . I pulled the drivers side cover by loosing the alt mount to get clearance and got on the lower torx .I cant see why loosing the ac comp wouldn't allow me to remove the cover .I have a few stubborn bolts to deal with this morn then i'll try the pass side . I quess I could go shop for extended torx to get at them but should replace the valve cover gasket anyway .I don't see any thing except heater blower and the pipe that I think feeds the egr on the pass side (which is cracked) that would get in the way of the valve cover .after I remove ac and I think some plumbing from air pump ??/

Nice corvette, While you have the intake apart make sure to clean the throttle body and remove the iac valve and clean it as well.

The blue manual is the loose leaf one like the service bays at the dealership uses mainly. Kind of like the ring binders you had in school. You can open them up and replace or add pages to the manual.

I got one after buying my car. Being mine came with a Tremec tranny, I got the info on it and after punching comparable holes was able to add that to the transmission section of the manual so it's all together.

Having trouble logging in today ??? anyway the intake is off and on the bench for cleaning . The EGR valve was stuck looks like since 86 .I couldn't get it ti move with a hammer . Why did this car throw no codes ???
check engine comes on at start up and goes off . egr should have set
a check engine light right ???/ i'll get everything cleaned up over the weekend and maybe Tuesday start putting it back together .
Can anybody direct me to the steps of putting everything back together so I don't have to do things three times
I think
1 lower manifold and distributer
2 runners because of bolts behind injectors
4 fuel injection sys
5 then the plenum will slide in ???????
6 valve covers and everything else

Sort of the way I pulled it
please comment I 'm sure to take it apart and back together 10 times
