I am wondering what you all put on values on a 84? Say compared to a 85? I know the crossfire kills it for poeple. If you could get a deal on one would you buy one?
If a 84 was nice and had around 100k on it what would you say its worth?
I am going to look at one. Its a project car. It runs and drive. Need interior put back in but is all their. tries good, weather stripping good, Rear bumper need painted and head light cover needs painted. He has the paint. Has service records, storied inside. Windshield has a crack in it. Owner said the digital dash was sent off and rebuild. Seats do not have cracks.
I am kinda put off on a crossfire, but I am not going racing. Just cruse around with with the wife.
I think I can do the work mostly all my self. I have a few buddies that work pretty cheap too. LOL
I think I can get it bought for $3K

In my opinion, value is what you're willing to spend. I recently bought an '86 with 71,250 miles for $6,000. NADA book value is $10,250. 6 was what I was willing to spend with the needs of a 27 year old car.
A friend recently sold her late husband's two '84 vettes at auction. His white one had 3,000 miles and sold for $12,500 and his blue one had 55,000 miles selling for $7,500. Both were immaculate.
Good original 84s with low miles are actually headed up because they were the 1st C4 but with the carry over L83 Cross-Fire engine bumped 5 additional hp to 205. 84 earned Motor Trend Magazine's "Car of The Year" award and equipped with the optional Z51 suspension package achieved 1G cornering force on the skid pad. This was a one year only deal as Chevrolet softened the suspension by a lot for all subsequent model years. Even 84 standard suspension was as stiff or stiffer than Z51 in all later models.
The 230hp Tuned Port L98 did appear in 1985 but this was not really a huge increase compared to later models which offered much more horsepower.
For your comparison, I bought this '85 with 66k miles a few months ago for $5k. It has newer tires, paint and interior. It is a 4+3, with the Dana 44 rear end, and doesn't need any work.
For an '84, you could probably spend a few thousand dollars more and find something great that doesn't need any work done, and be ahead money wise. Another thing to consider with the '84 is that they were only equipped with the weak Dana 36 rear end. But it should be fine if you're just cruising.

You stole that car for only $5000.00! Very nice indeed.

For 1985 and forward the Dana 44 was standard in all manual transmission C4s while every automatic equipped C4 received a Dana 36. If the 36 had not been robust enough Chevrolet would not have continued using it throughout the C4's 12 year production run. Now with a hopped up engine, high stall speed torque converter and 8" slicks I could see where you might need to upgrade but why is it OK to change all that other stuff and then claim the OEM axle was weak?
The auto will be the quicker of the two by the way

Yeah, it's fine if you're cruising, like the OP wants. I assume GM used the D36 on all auto cars since the 700r4, especially the early ones, aren't exactly great transmissions and can carry less torque than even the D36.
As for which is quicker, I guess that'd depend on the gear ratio. All the D44 cars had a performance gear ratio standard.
To the OP: I'm not saying its bad or anything like that. The '84 had the best suspension, and it'll be a really fun car to drive.
Chevrolet used the same automatic transmission throughout the production run. Later models have the updated electronic version of the 700R4 known as 4L60E. I work with a fellow is used to do a lot of automatic transmission work and since mine has the 4L60E I asked him what he thought of them. He replied they're good reliable transmissions.

IMO you should pay no more than 3k. I bought my 84 about 4 years ago with 84k miles for $4,700.00. It was a "fair" driver that has the 4+3 and is a Z/51 -which about half of the 84's were.
I had a $2,500.00 driver paint job done, did replacing, repairing etc. of about $2,000.00 and ended up with a "real nice" driver that I now have about 94k miles on and have enjoyed them all.
I don't want to sell it, but I think I could only get about $5,000.00 for it -so it is not an investment that will give any return -except for the fun factor.
Hate to say it but I sold my 84 with 90,000mile on it last year and got $8,500. It was mint all new muffler eliminators.Chip,Accell ignition shiftkit. interior wood grain little crome on engine K&N filter and a home made RAM AIR indution system. It was up around 250 HP smoked the tires and chirped in second gear. was auto. Guy loves it drives it everyday. I got a good deal and so did he. Depends what you want to spend. I put about $5,ooo into it.

Okay, so you're going to spend at least another $3k bringing a 30-year-old Vette back to life, so you'll have $6k-plus in a rolling piece of history that will give you much pleasure. Buy it. Here's my '84 Z51. Bought it a couple years ago for $4500 with odo showing 35k. Mint condition in and out. Now has 40. Spent money on tires, Dymag wheels, AC, fuel system, water pump, softer springs and shocks. Hwy mileage in very high 20s. Love the glove-like seats, the go-kart steering. Probably have $8500 invested and lovin' every penny.
I love the 84's, they were the car that got all of the attention for the new body style, and motor trend car of the year. I would spend a little more and get a low mile car, there is just something about a low mile crisp C4.
Here is a link to one I want really bad, the price is awesome if it is in as good of shape as it looks.
