Default C5 guy checking in

I am a everyday reader and sometimes poster in the C5 forums and decided to visit over here and see if you guys are as rabid over your cars as we are. I'm beginning to think some of us are borderline neurotic. The current discussions tend to focus on values due to a new series being out, early cars (C5's) being a bad investment, parts availability issues, ect. Lots of modding discussions from wheels to interiors to performance enhancements.

Are C4 owners as mod crazy as most of the C5 guys can be?

Yes, some of us C4 owners are mod crazy. If I had more money, I'd mod my car more than it is now.

In addition to my 99 FRC I have a 95 Impala SS so I am familiar with the Lt1. Only thing I have done to that car is had a set of Tri-Y headers. What are the favorite mods to the C4's, same as C5's, cams heads, intakes, forced induction?

This is supposed to be on the brown truck for me Monday,

This is supposed to be on the brown truck for me Monday,

Typically with the L98 engines, Mini Rams and Super Rams are popular, along with some different long runner intakes for people that enjoy the neck braking power of the low RPM torque. Typically, a camshaft swap or roller rockers is included in this, and very often, the heads are swapped. A set of headers and a full exhaust is almost always used. And some people use superchargers. And then you have the guys who make a lot of power with 383 strokers and some people that have 406 and 434 small blocks and stuff like that.

On the LT engines, it's generally easier to make significant power using some components that it comes with. For example, the LT1 and LT4 intake is a high reving intake, which quite a few people want, so they keep that, and some people may port it out. The LT1 and LT4 heads already flow pretty decent, so some people just finish them off with a port and polish, others would rather swap them out with usually a set of AFRs for a little more power. People also may use a 383 stroker with this engine. And a camshaft to make some more power, or they might use high ratio rockers. And headers.

Typically you can feel a lot of improvement with a cam and headers on a stock LT1.

My car has a Mini Ram intake, flat tappet version of ZZ409 camshaft, Hedman Long Tube Headers, cat delete, EGR delete, AIR delete, Air Filter Cut Lid, K&N air filter, descreened MAF, 58MM throttle body, Throttle Body Coolant Bypass, 10* BTDC Timing, Heated O2 sensor conversion, MSD 8.5mm ignition wires, 3.75s in the rear, speedometer calibrator, AFR gauge with Wideband O2 Sensor, Chip adapter soldered into computer with a tuning kit and tuning software, Dynomax Ultra Flo mufflers, and a couple other things that I might be missing. I will be getting AFR 195 heads very very soon though, so I'm excited for that. I also have ZR1 highly polished aluminum replica rims from AFS wheels that are 17 inch, run 315s on the rear and 275s in the front. My car is a 1985 Corvette.

Modding is a lot of fun, but can be a lot of headaches. I enjoy working on it, but running into problems can really get discouraging.

its like 50/50

half are stock guys, and strive to do everything they can to keep it that way
the other half have a crazy amount of mods, and not much stock stuff is left on the car except for the engine and frame

both make great c4's to drive!

personally i am a stock guy
think they had it perfect back in 93!

There are alot of us putting higher HP engines into our C4s ( 383,406), some even going as far as putting LS engines in... I guess if your one who likes to modify, your going to do it to whatever year Corvette you own........WW

Many C4's are modded out of neccessity, as in, factory OEM replacements are getting more and more difficult to come by.

What about stance. It seems no one is happy with the ride height of the C5 as it comes from the factory. Some lower them as far as the adjustment bolts allow even if ride quality is adversely affected. Is this an issue with the C4's?

...
I have a C4 and two C5's (and a '96 Impala - well actually a Caprice LT1 with mods).

The two best sections on the forum are the C4's and C5's. There are a lot of people that do a lot of things with their cars. Both groups do a lot of their own maintenance/repairs and mods. Both groups forums have a lot of info and guidance on what works and how to do projects (many threads with pictures help too).

The C5's seem to have a lot more forced induction mods, but both sections do some mods to increase performance. The LS1/6 motors are generally easier to make power than the L98/LT1 motors.

The value questions are remarkably similar in that the early C4's seem to sell for less than the later ones, much like the early/late C5's although the reasons are a little different. On the C5's it is more because of parts availability of certain things like the EBCM, etc. On the C4 it is more about preference of style, digital dash or not, L98 vs. LT1, early suspension (with 16" wheels) vs. later suspension, etc.

If you are thinking about a C4 to add to your stable, I recommend it. The C4's and C5's are very different cars and I like both. They have a very different "feel" when driving them. If you are thinking about a C4, you should test drive a bunch of them and see if you like it too.

Good luck.

As for stance and lowering, the C5's talk about that and many lower them, it is much less prevalent on the C4's. Most keep relatively stock height. I kept my C5's stock height also since there is so much debris in the roads around here.

Always a pleasure to have a relative visit the older generation. Without us.....yours might not have been.

We are a mix of mod and stock. I am on the mod side. Our cars are old and technology has improved greatly over the years. But without paying the price for a good used C5 we can mod our cars and we turn into the sleeper on the road next to you that will blow your doors off.....at the track of course!

I've been burned on mods when I had my '85, so for me, I want the car stock when I buy it.
