86 smokes

86 smokes
I have an 86 coupe, auto with aluminum heads. I bought the car for a song and dance $3k. It has z51 package, aluminum heads' 307rear end and and just about every performance option that was available. I like it. I had a 77 for 20 years. It smokes blue after idles and is warmed up. Doesn't really smoke when it first starts up which would indicate valve seals. Doesn't smoke on acceleration which would indicate rings. I read past forums on transmission modulator, clogged valve cover drains. Help

Well, not enough info to put a finger on it. It might be as simple as seals, or a general overhaul...hard to tell from what we know.
Just a cursory inspection would be to inspect the sparkplugs - see if there is one or few holes that are especially oily.
A compression check or (better) leak-down check will focus on problem holes.
Manifold vacuum at idle
PVC valve
...and get back 2 US!

He's given plenty of info to diagnose valve seals.
Hang around here long enough its not that difficult.
Plus, if you follow the 86's you'll see that after 100K and 25 years this problem is text book.

Melting Slicks
I ran Mobil 1 in my '86 for a year. I get the puff at startup of a warm engine. I have now gone back to a Dino oil (one with higher ZDDP for my cam) and am curios to see if the puff decreases. I know that my valve cover gasket did not weep until I did the synthetic.

DinoBob, You have the same warm engine start up problem I have. Only 44k on the car but the seals are 29 years old. I'm getting new valve stem seals installed in the spring. About a $600.00 job from what my mechanic estimated. He assured me that was the problem.

Fellas, once the job is done and the rockers need adjustment, how do you do so without making a horrible mess?

You can set them after completing each cylinder.
Make sure the piston is at TDC.
Run the rocker down to zero lash and add a 1/2 to 3/4 turn.
Move on to the next cylinder in line....
