I have searched high and low and have found conflicting stories. My project has been blessed with 08 Z06 Spoke rims in 18" to replace the factory saw blades. Car is equipped with TPMS so I know the bands will not fit the 18's and these sensors are no longer made.
Some have reported removing the sensors is fine and does not light the light since they are absent and not low and others report this trips the light.
I simply need someone that has upgraded minus the sensors to chime in and tell me what to expect so I can get these babies mounted with new 285/35/18 tires
I have the TPMS option on my 90. I'm pretty sure I have this right, but from what I understand, the batteries in the wheel sensors only have a 10 year life expectancy. with the car coming up on 24 years old, I doubt that my sensors are functioning as designed. my warning light comes on during start-up, but no light during normal driving activity. not sure how many sets of tires have been on the car, and I'm not even sure, the wheel sensors are still in place. I don't care -- no light, no worries!

The style of sensors we have in our 1990s don't have batteries. They are self powered when they turn/vibrate. Kinda like one of those flashlights that you shake to power. The newer sensors won't work either. I get the TPWS light all the time but not a wheel light so I likely have a problem with the "brain".
The newer Corvette style sensors do have batteries.
On a 90 if all four are removed you will not get the light or have a problem.
BUT
it seems that several months ago a fellow did remove his from a '90 and he did say that he DID get the light. Up until that statement I don't recall that ever being noted. I don't see it being an issue that should keep you from mounting tires/wheels and reacting when/if it becomes an issue to be dealt with. I don't know why you would "wait" if: 1. you need tires or 2. have them mounted and ready to go.
I did NOT get a light when I removed my '90 wheels and mounted A-molds with no sensors.
The TPMS is powered by Piezoelectric technology, that technology seems to be making a resurgence in TPMS technology because the technology is generally thought to be the "life of the monitor" and not limited by time as batteries. They're considered "Green devices" I'm sure.

Awesome responses guys, much appreciated.
The reason to wait here is simple - this is a project car that has seen less than 5 miles on the street in the last 7 months. Tires are dry rotted and about 8 years old as the car sat for 6 years before I got it. I just got my Z06 repos and am buying tires this week. If the sensors do not adversely effect the on dash lights I can take the wheels and get new rubber mounted and remove the old wheels later and not risk driving to the tire shop. On the other hand if I need to address the sensors to keep the light off I need another plan or need to locate bands for 18" wheels so that I can get the sensors moved over at the time of the new tires being mounted.
I just tried swapping my TPMS sensors over from my 17 inch stock rims to 18 inch rims and what a pain.... Just a heads up, the universal straps sold at Advance Auto (same ones on Amazon) are worthless. They're so thin, they bend when trying to tighten them up. I just decided to do without TPMS until I can find some decent straps or possibly install an aftermarket TPMS.
