Default Differential Issues

I was swapping out wheels over the week end, I found used C5 chrome wheels. Anyway, as I was instaling the rear wheels I noticed huged build up of dirt. This can only mean there is a leak in that area and dirt collect through the years.

Is there any known issue of leaks on the differential or where the half shaft goes into the diff?

I always do a complete fluid change when I buy a used car. What type of diff oil used on for this car? Thank you.

There are three seals in the differential, the front pinion, left half-shaft axle and the right half-shaft axle. The pinion is the most frequent and that would typically be in the front of, slung allover the undercarriage side to side and on the bottom of the differential. The left and right aren't as likely but certainly can. You need to check the fluid on the right side 3/8 hex I'd say sooner than later and check the vent on the rear axle cover. If the vent is plugged the seals will leak. Top the fluid off with conventional GL5 80W90. There's no need to change it until you correct the leak.

The pinion seal is not difficult and can be done in the car. The left and right require the removal of the differential.

Thank you! most of the build up of dirt is on the rear part of the diff and some along the side close to the short shafts. I planned on putting this on a lift so I can get a good look at the whole diff area.
