Default Ac not blowing cold

So I live in AZ and having an A/C that doesn't pout out icicles means I'll park it instead of drive it .

System has no leaks, new expansion valve, evaporator and condenser all the blend doors working properly and the high low pressures in spec. Best I'm getting out the vents is in the mid 50's (verified all the blend doors closed):, when it should be in the 40's.

What am I missing?

Happy memorial day weekend to all.

I know exactly.....

Many thanks to Vettemed, I have created this thread to be a standalone thread as a searchable solution. If you are having dimished AC performance after replacing the evaporator core. Last summer my car in my opinion was not cooling down as much as it used to do in heavy AC load conditions in the 118-122 dog days of summer in Arizona. It always used to be a lot colder from my memory and since reparing the AC a year or so ago with all new parts I just could not figure out what was going on. I remembered this post up as Andrew was having the same problems. I put this on the long list of projects I wanted to complete this winter. I missed it.. however, and it didnt make it to the list last winter, Tuesday of this week was a uber rare Santa Ana winds fed blustery day here in AZ and the evening temps in the garage were in the 70s and I said well... now or never. I had my evaporator core replaced while I was TDY at work so I never saw the original unit that was removed. Long story short I had the exact same gap on the left side of the evaporator core that Vettemed has pictured here. So I fed gray foam material, the kind used used to protect guns and hard drives into that vertical slot. Walla.. in 100 degree temps yesterday the AC was spitting out 46 Degree air.

This view is what you might see if you pull the blower motor and look towards the evaporator core. See that vertical gap? it should not be there. As Andrew stated in his post either the replacement evaporator core is shorter than stock or it is factory foamed in on that side. Make sure you or your installer is aware of this issue so they can address it at time of replacement. Vettemed was 100% correct with the gap hot air was bypassed into the system and mixing into the cooler air.

Thanks much for this tip. It's usually the little things that get overlooked. I'll be tearing into my ac next week.

Ordered some A/C foam tape from the local guy (should be here today). Will try to have it all back together this weekend and see what it does. (Hard to work in a 108 degree garage after work, so has to be very early in the morning - as you well know.)

Yeah it sucks working in this heat. On I-17 the car was reporting 113 outside air on the Freeway yesterday and was provided 56 degree air. Im pretty happy about that. In the morning the AC will freeze you out lol. GL I think your about to be real happy. GC

My '92 is the same way. The A/C is cool, but not freezing me out. I'll have to look for that gap. Thanks for the tip!

It takes 30 mins to check make a project out of it clean out the box while your in there. Relax the inner fender to allow room for the squirrel cage to come out. Be mindful of the drain tube position on them underside of the blower housing.

TALK ABOUT MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

Car running at 205F to 220F, everything fully hot, car sat outside, closed in a balmy 108F Arizona afternoon for a few hours before I got in; took no time to cool down and I measured inside 46F on the highway/105F o the control gauge.

Thanks again for the tip; the work was well worth it.

I used Advanced Auto Parts PVC foam; working great. If I did it right, the link is below.

So My ac never felt like it was as cold as it should be, and it also didn't have the airflow like it did when it was set to 90* for heat...

I found my problem today thanks to you guys. I do indeed have the 1/4" gap which I will fill with foam, but I also found this blocking part of my evap core...unfortunately the super glue is long dried up.

Thanks

Mike

Got out to test it this weekend and it was without a doubt colder! I used high density foam found at the hardware store.

Thanks for the tip!
