My 1990 C4 automatic transmission
will not shift while driving. She starts out fine but will not shift to the next gear. This came on suddenly with no
warning Signs. I never hear any loud
bangs or anything mechanical. She
just started slipping and revving up.
I am not a auto mech but the best way to describe it would if it were a Manuel transmission, and you pushed the clutch. .. Any help would be grest

Hi
The cable at the throttle body that goes down to the transmission governs the fluid pressure, check at full throttle there is no play in the cable. The cable can break or the cable can come off in the transmission. Usually with the cable off the transmission shifts to top gear very quickly and yes it can slip, you can ruin a good transmission with the cable not connected to the throttle body.

The cable is designed to control transmission shifts, smooth shifts at low rpm and firm shifts at high rpm.

If the governor fails the transmission will not shift out of first gear, that can be fixed with the trans in the car.

The first thing I would do is check the fluid level.

4L60Es don't have that cable. Everything is done in the transmission controller in the PCM.

[ EDIT ] My mistake. That is NOT correct. I thought it was a later year. [ /EDIT ]

..... '90 didn't have an E trans ... 700R4/4L60 with TV cable ..... there's a variety of things that could be wrong with it , start by getting some pressure readings after you do the obvious cable and fluid checks ... you could just drop the oil pan , but operating as described , I suspect the trans has been injured .....

Sorry. I misread the year (or got mixed up with another thread). Or the OP changed the year...

That god damn TV cable What a pain in the anus.
Mine "went on me" last week as I was driving it home from my auto elecs. I'm now semi-suicidal over thinking that I've fried my 700. I haven't driven it since. Gotta get the bracket for it welded on my t/b..

OP.. bit of info for you:

"1. Connect the front of the cable up the top of engine where it latches in.
2. Connect the eyedrop plastic piece to the throttle area.
3. Press the "D" looking button and push the cable in towards the transmission as much as possible until it no longer
goes in anymore.
4. Release "D" button and then fully open throttle at throttle body. You'll hear it ratchet into place."

"Hook it up a bit tighter than recommended, so that there's tension on the cable as soon as it comes off idle."

"Hold the button in and with your other hand put your throttle to the wide open position, put a little pressure on it
when it is in the wide open position. Let go of the button and you will hear the cable ratchet into its proper
position. Let go of the throttle, thats it your done."

"Press that button and while you have the button pressed, move the ratchet bracket back towards the fire wall,
then release the button. NOW slowly open the throttle and listen for the clicks all the way to WOT, your done."

A personnel thank you for sending me in the right direction.
Resetting the TV cable and cleaning the Throttle pos sensor seems to have fixed my issue for now. Not sure why it all of a sudden decided to act up. I do appreciate all the advise guys, it helped... Regards, Rich
