im looking at buying a c4 w/manual trans what is the pros and cons on this body style i know they had elecrical issues on the 84 and info would help thx joe
The 1984 Corvette was the first year of a 13 year body style run. The most different thing was the '84 was a crossfire injection versus direct fuel injection in all other years. Many crossfires had problems although many never had any issues. Plus there were many improvements over the years that improved the driveability. The '84 had one of the harshest rides of C4's which was immediately changed in '85.
I'm not aware of the electrical issues but if there are any, you'll be able to find answers here on the forum.
There are no cons to the body style really. Its more of a matter of styling preference. I've owned both C4 variants and love both.
All cars are subject to bugs, some more than others of course. The digital cluster on the early C4's are prone to failure. The later cluster units are very durable and clearly read.
Each change improved various aspects of the car and its up to the buyer as to which options are important as there are a wide variety of them. Perhaps let us know if there are any certain cars you are considering and post a link or details and we can better help you with any specific questions you may have about that particular car.
Early C4s had the 4+3 manual trans; '95-'91 had the TPI system.
In '89 the 6-speed was introduced along with 17" wheels and elimination of the "9th injector". This was the last year of the digi dash and a tilt & tele steering wheel; later C4 had an air bag with no tele function.
In '92 came the LT1 engine and other changes.
Pick up a copy of "The Corvette Black Book" for details on the features of each year of Corvettes.
