My 96 coupe died when leaving home and had been jerking, cutting out frequently for a few days prior, when this happened I'd just mash on it a lil bit and it got me where I was goin, had also been hard to start a few times and I'd treat it as if it were flooded my pressing accelerator 3/4 down and spinning over till it cranked. On the day it died just outa the driveway , it started the same way but about 5 miles down the road I mashed on it and got to about 110 and then coasted back to speed limit then shortly afterwards the a/c stopped blowing cold and there was a burn smell such as electrical, I pulled over leaving it running, raised the hood and the pungent smell was from the ECM area, I drove home and parked it.... Would this seem to be a burned out computor? Please help
First see what codes are being set...barring your ECM isn't going. But yeah, if you have an electrical smell from the area of the ECM it certainly point's to a possible culprit. A bad component in the ECM would make the computer think something was wrong with the car and try to adjust for it, even though all sensors are actually running correctly.
Could be different things at one time. The initial problem seems to be fuel related, bad fuel pump, pressure regulator, injector(s). The loss of a/c and smell could have come from a burned up compressor. Or it all can be the result of a shorted wire. Or it could be a failed component in the computer.
As you can see from this and other posts, there are a lot of "could be's". You need to start with pulling codes. Since it is a 96, you can easily get the codes with an obdII reader. Also, if you don't have a FSM, get one.
