I have heard of fuel tank bladders collapsing and causing the fuel level sender to get hung up. You ought to take out the fuel level sender and see what's happening:

Reason: more to say
I always reset my trip mileage when I fill-up and just use it as a backup to the gauge. I know how far it usually goes between fills so I'd know if the gauge ever goes wacky or not.
You may want to pull fuel pump/sending unit out of the fuel tank and clean the sending unit. There has been several postings as of late on how to do that. I just did mine a couple of weeks ago and adjusted arm. It seems to be much more accurate now and at least it shows to be almost empty, giving me time to fill it up.
Something else to check, over time the rubber line on the fuel pump gets soft and you can lose fuel pressure. If you pull the unit replace the small line and use good ss clamps.
