Mobil 1 (high mileage)
I use Mobil 1 just like the sticker under the hood says. At the store their is the high mileage version of the same oil. Car has 82k on the odo. (94 c4 coupe). I am not a big fan of switching oils since in my youth I was told that it could cause sludge problems. I used to buy whatever was on sale for my regular cars--but I stopped doing that a long time ago. I would appreciate any thoughts on Mobil 1 HIGH MILEAGE. Thanks

I don't personally think that 82K is "high mileage" especially for a 20 year old car. If the car had 150K plus showing on the odometer, then I would consider using a high mileage oil. Stick with 5W-30 Mobil-1 and change it at recommended intervals and use a good quality oil filter and you should be fine!

The high mileage formulation has more zinc and phosphorus additives ( zddp for flat tappet cams mainly) and I heard they tweaked the viscosity slightly. If you want a better mobil 1 5w-30 or 10w-30, get the extended use oil with the gold cap.
Here's the formulation facts

You can use it if you wish. Here is a link to the Mobil 1 webpage about it -

It appears to be regular Mobil 1 with extra anti-wear, extra cleaning additive and seal conditioners. It says it is for cars with over 75K miles.
I don't think it will cause any problems and I certainly don't think there is any chance of it causing extra sludge.

My 85 has been on 5W-30 M1 for most of it's life. When looking at the zinc numbers I decided to try the High Mileage. The car had 97000 on the clock. The parts house had 10W-30 so I thought that would be ok. The very first thing I noticed was a puff of white smoke at start up, that was about 2 days later. It has never had that before.. Don't know why, I don't believe it has anything to do with the viscosity. I'm going to go back to regular 5W30 on the next change. I do a change every 5000.

That thinking is "lore". No truth to it, w/today's brand name oils.
Here is some good reading for the OP...Mobil 1 High Mileage

I use AMSOIL Signature Series oil and their ea oil filters. I went 25,000 miles between change on my aurora and when my neighbor changed it (he's a gm mechanic who thinks they are always right) could not believe how good it looked. Lab tests have shown no harmful results in oil analysis tests. I think we change our oil way to often. Using a good filter and oil with very good breakdown and wear capabilities should be used. Doing an oil analysis can certainly help in determining the condition of what is really happening with the oil.

If your engine is running well and not having any problems, stick with the regular Mobil 1 5w30 you have been using. It's an excellent product that has served your engine very well so far and will continue to do so. It won't hurt anything to switch to the high mileage formulation, but also it's not going to help a problem that you don't even have. It's just not necessary at this point. Like c4cruiser said, maybe when you have 150k on the odometer... maybe.

Just coming up on 165K on the clock. I explored the high mileage several years ago and don’t remember all the details but I decided to stick with the regular Mobil1. All is still tight , it still runs good, no oil consumption problems and I don’t consider 165 excessively high. Possible some other cars other than the LT1 might need the high mileage oil at that mileage but I don’t think we do. The LT1 is an extraordinary engine if taken care of.
Since I live in Orland where it's hot (hot hot) and not really cold in the winter, I use 10w30 as I fall into that window according to the documentation.
I just sold my 280ZX with 340,00 miles on it today after 31 years of having it. (We had to many cars and the vette stays). Now that might be considered high mileage and might be a candidate for it.

I gotta ask who buys a car with 340k miles? There's actually a market? I reckon it was cheap, but seriously as i have been considering keeping a couple of cars i currently have and driving them into the ground.

I run the mobil 1 extended performance in my 96, have been for years. I run the high milage on my 00 suburban with 248,000 miles and extended performance on my wife's little accent. And I agree with what was said above, you aren't going to cause sludge from switching motor oils these days, especially when you stay within the same brand.
What to have fun, get your oil tested. I do mine once a year, typically every other oil change (~7,500 miles).

The Mobil1 High mileage is great for older cars, regardless the mileage. I've been running it in the 1994 since I bought it a year ago. I change the oil every 6 months or so regardless of mileage. For $30, why the heck not. It's the cheapest insurance you can buy, and I love changing oil anyway.

Use the HM and if you notice less piston slap at startup then it'll be good for your engine. It is a bit more viscous and will cut down on mpg a little (personal observation).
In the engines I've rebuilt or repaired that used M1 full syn, they **never** had any sludge or coking. None in the pan, none in the heads, no coking on or around the lifters, and no coking in areas where oil is sprayed on hot parts.
M1 isn't an end all solution but IMO its a solid value. I'd suggest 10k mile oil changes w/a new filter. Maybe more if the engine is used in non-dusty areas and mostly steady speed driving. (up around 15k it gets more viscous and acts like a 50W oil when hot)
Cheapest I've found for HM is at costco. The one near me sells a box w/two 5qt jugs for less than $50
