Default Distributor question

I have a 84 Crossfire. This problem has been going on for 5 years. This car is a low mileage driver. But every 500 miles or so the cap arc's and the car wont start. Change the rotor and it runs with no issues for just about 500 miles and then the same issue. I have used GM rotors, High performance rotors, changed the whole cap, changed the coil makes no difference. About 500 miles arc's on top of the cap and car wont start. I know this is a tuff one but at this stage I will try any suggestions.

..... Its been a while since I messed with an HEI distributor BUT ... make sure you have the correct coil for yours ... there are two different versions ... you can tell by the color of the wires that come out of the coil ... As I recall , one has red and white wires and the other is red and yellow ... ALSO make sure the ground strap is installed on the coil ... it goes from one coil corner hold down screw to the three prong plug at the square harness connector adapter on the distributor cap ..........
