Default Another Jacking Tip - Maybe?

The mechanic that has done work for me on my Coupe is a good Vette guy and has owned several himself. He manages the local Goodyear SErvice Center and he has told me not to lift the vehicle with the Targa Roof tightened down. Matter of fact he opens both doors and the hatch before lifting the car. He said that the car can flex enough to stress crack the acrylic roof panel and or body panels.

I don't know if this is true, but it makes sense to me. What do you all think?

From what I have read, the car flexes if you DON'T have the targa top on it and opeing the doors would cause even more flex.

When I was investigating C4's to buy, I read that the car was originally designed as a T-top for structural integrity but was changed to a targa at the last minute with no frame modifications, untilmately causing more frame flex than intended with the top off. They sell aftermarket braces for racers that go where the "T" bar would have gone.

Just $0.02 from a non-engineer enthusiast :)

I have raised my 85 both with the top on and with it off.........floor jack or a lift , hood open or closed ............ crooked , sideways and everything with no problems whatsoever. I think the worst thing that cane be dome to these cars (from the sounds it makes) is going across a very bad dip like at the side of a road where a ditch or gutter should be ........diagonally........
The car twists badly and really creaks ......... but when raising my car I sometimes need to get in it and even the doors work properly so I wouldn't be too concerned. :yesnod:

The Vettes you had to open the doors were the 63-67 models. It's an old schoolers tip that I had told to me when I bought my 90. I checked with GM to find out that they corrected that issue long before the C4.

The goold old fashioned way is my method...find a good jacking point, up she goes. Doors and hood stay closed, top stays on. Up Up and Away! :yesnod:

I heard the same thing from the guy that sold the 'vette to me. I don't know if it's true though. I lifted the car with the top on tight, no problems.
