Hi, seeking advice: the '92 is Stabil-ized, battery is removed, and has fresh anti-freeze. Car is in a car cover in my barn in Maine. Since the temps in the barn can be as cold as the great outdoors I was thinking of attaching one of those oil pan magnetic heaters and leaving it on to keep at least the lower area somewhat warm. Is this a dumb idea? Overkill? as the anti-freeze is supposedly good for like -30. This is first time storing in non-heated space. Thanks, Larry
I wouldn't. If you are leaving it until spring, don't worry about it. If you are planning on taking it out sometime in the cold maybe go back 24 hrs before and put it on the pan. Warm it up a bit, then pop ur battery in and go.
I'd be more worried about rats and mice crawling in and making a home for the winter. Had that happen once. They crawled in and got into the dash and chewed up all kinds of vacuum lines
You treated the fuel, disconnected the battery. If you want to, you can fog the cylinders by pulling out the plugs and spraying fogging oil and crank, repeat and reinstall the plugs.
...makes no sense to keep the oil warm if you don't intend to drive the car. I agree with the others, warmth will just attract cold critters.
I disagree. Think about all the money you waste that the utility company will make. That goes to taxes and that means the millions on welfare will be taken care of.
Dad kept the heater on for a month for the diesel truck. Suffice to say, he got a sticker shock when he saw the heating bill. Now he plugs it in a few hours before he needs it. When it gets really cold, I plug it in only on a timer set for 3 hours before anticipated need.
When I place my cars in winter storage I put a large number of the inexpensive spring traps close to the tires and under the car along with drier sheets in the interior of the car. DO NOT bait the traps, you do not want to draw them in.
I've killed mice next to the tires in the past (this is the easiest way for them to climb up).
Thank goodness I have not had a problem thus far.
This winter I think I will also place some of the glue boards around the tires.
here in florida, we winterize our corvettes by changing from 10W30 to 5W30 -
Joe:
You should take a winter trip up here in northern Minnesota. Last winter it only got down to -35. No bugs to worry about like you have down in Fla.

-35 -- thanks, but no thanks! after 64 years in western Pennsylvania, and NE ohio, I've had my fill of winter. can't do the cold anymore.
