What year is the car? Year would dictate original function BUT it could be either of the mentioned locations if someone has altered the wiring in some fashion.

In 1984 and 1985 the sensor between the #1 spark plug and the #3 spark plug on the driver's side is the source for the dash display.
In 1986 and newer the sensor for the dash display is on the passenger side between the #6 and #8 spark plugs.
Changes like these are the reason it is always a good idea to put the year of the car in a post asking for help. It does matter.
