Default Starter issue??

Hi gang. I hope everyone has been enjoying their toys with the gorgeous fall weather.
I am having an issue with what I believe is the starter. When the engine is cold, the starter seems a bit slow, but works. When the engine is hot, it labors, stops momentarily, and then labors again and the engine starts. I keep a battery maintainer on the battery, and its only 2 years old, and tests good with a hyrometer so I kind of doubt this is the cause.
Is this problem the starter getting ready to go out, or is it another issue?? Is there a particular brand of starter I should look for as a replacement?? Any other suggestions and tips are greatly appreciated ! ! !

It may be the starter, but it may also be the contacts on the battery cable at the battery, or at the starter...If there is any corrosion anywhere in the battery cable it can interrupt the current flow...You need to first test the battery with a multimeter, then test the cable under load , then move on to the starter last....WW

Ok thank you very much for this information. Would it matter if the engine was hot or cold when the problem arises?? The only time it is an issue is with a hot engine. The connections are clean at the battery, but i havent been underneath yet. It also the original starter and cables. Are the cables worth cleaning up if a connection at the starter is corroded, or should I just replace them both??

It's probably a tired starter. Heat kills them. But the Nippon Denso Toyota starter *(borrowed by GM) is the best starter ever invented and can be rebuilt cheaply or swapped with a rebuilt one for $75-100. Don't need a new one. The bearings and brushes never wear out. It's usually the solenoid assembly. That part is $14.

It also sounds like a dead cell in the battery. No help, right? The newest C4 is 19 years old.

It's also possible that the contacts inside the starter solenoid are burned.

I saw an article on how to replace the contacts years ago but didn't bookmark it, so can't help you there. I did a Google search and found this:

From what I see it is an 84?
I don't know how the timing on the 84 is done, but I have seen something similar to the your description from the timing too far advanced.

EDIT
Or maybe it was retarded...now I have just thought about it too much and have no idea...

You were right the first time, to far advanced will cause hard starting, and make the starter struggle.....WW

Well, I guess I got lucky. The weather here in south FLorida is glorious right now.....Yesterday I decided I wanted to enjoy a short ride to the Florida Keys today. So, I ran by NAPA and got a new starter and changed it out. What a HUGE difference ! ! ! The engine JUMPS to life now. Thanks for all the tips. See you in the KEYS ! !
