Hello all,
I have an issue that cropped up on my '94 last week. I noticed alternator whine in the speakers, and fluctuations in the LCD portion of my dash. My first thought was that the alternator is on its way out. I verified its output and it seems to be right on.
Yesterday I decided to do some troubleshooting, thinking it might be related to the tuner in the storage compartment. After some tinkering with that, I checked the speakers again, and the whine was gone. Yay! No! Today when I fired up to go to work, the whine was back, and when I turned the stereo off and back on, the LCD blinked off then back on. I also noticed that when raising the passenger window, I heard some popping in the right speaker near the top of the window's travel. Back to square one! Any thoughts out there?
I recently replaced the passenger window guide, but the hum did not appear for a few weeks. I also cleaned out the storage bin. It had collected some water, but the tuner was not wet.
It has the earmarks of a grounding issue. Do you have a FSM? That would be a place to start; see what ground connections are common with those systems that seem to be related...is a good place to start.

Good luck!
It was the alternator itself as it turned out! My mechanic gave me a couple of tricks to try in troubleshooting, and it was the alternator. Fixed 'er up and all is good now. No more electrical gremlins. Thanks for the input!
