89 steering
I was told by the local mechanic that my intermediate joint was gone that the splines were worn down. Does this seem righ how could he know this by just having it up in the air. Wouldn't you have to take it all apart to find this out?

It sounds like he's referring to the joint at the steering rack, which does have splines on it. This joint is under the black plastic cover at the left end of the silver intermediate shaft in the picture.:
I think you could tell if the joint was worn by how the steering wheel feels when moved back and forth. If there is a feeling of slack before resistance is felt then maybe the splines are worn.

thx Cliff for the pic, yes the steering does have play and I am going to get the rack replaced but how cab he tell if its the shaft or the rack that's worn. I think you would have to take it apart to tell this.He went on some big doom and gloom how they don't make the shafts anymore.I have one coming from C4 parts just in case. I think he was guessing and setting me up for a bigger bill.

I think a lot of these mechanics are like doctors. They tell you the worst possible outcome so you'll feel relieved and happy when it doesn't happen. It's also a hedge on their part so you can't blame them if it turns out worse than they told you.
