Default 85 OEM wheel locks

I need help in finding a lug nut key to fit these locks on my 85 that I'm restoring. I've searched to no avail, even had someone send me 4 different ones to try with no luck, Hopefully someone can help, PLEASE!!

Thanks,

Bob

They look like "McGard wheel locks" (or a clone) and not OEM.

Some tire shops keep an assortment of "keys".

Personally, I hate them. I think I'd rather have my wheels stolen than be unable to get them off. I take 'em off and throw 'em away...

I sincerely wish you the best of luck here sir. I've been fighting with the same nuts on my 85.

You can contact McGard and they'll have you send a picture and they'll sell you a key. I did this and had absolutely no luck getting them off with that key. The lugs were locked on too tight on mine. Yours look to be in good shape so you may have better luck with that approach.

The next option is lug removal sockets. I had to use the 1 1/8th size to get mine off. I'm still struggling with one on the right front that refuses to budge. At this point it's become personal between me and that lug nut. One of us isn't going to last through the weekend. Odds are about even on if it's me or that nut.

BTW, I spent a good half hour looking at images on Google trying to find a match for your key, it seems to be pretty unique. Let's hope it's a McGard and not some knockoff. I checked the ones from my '94 (that I removed and tossed in the bin) and they look nothing like your posting, so I doubt yours are OEM.

Best of luck ..

They are the original equipment McGard locks. That style was used on the early C4's. They are actually pretty good locks if you use the key correctly.

On my '85 the lock key was originally on a clip on the side of the jack handle in the passenger side rear compartment under the tray. Hopefully it is still there.

Good luck.

Thanks. I'll try McGard and hopefully they will have the pattern I need to fit mine. All that I've seen so far has a different pattern than mine which only has 3 "lobes vs. 5 or so!! If not then I'm gonna drill the studs out and put new ones in with regular lug nuts!!Thanks again!! Bob

Good luck.
Good find!!

What the OP might try is to take the car to a tire shop to see if they can get the locking lugs removed. Most chain stores like Discount Tire should be able to remove that lugnut without harming the stud. It may result in the destruction of the lugnut, but at least they will be gone and the standard lug nuts could be used or even aftermarket lugnuts.

Companies like McGard and Gorilla Lock have lugnut sets that include matching locking lugnuts.

Drilling out the stud is a PITA.

I know drilling is a PITA but car was in "Sandy" flood and not drivable until I can get the lugs off and re-do the brakes (along with a bunch of other things).....it only has 11288.8 original miles or it would be parted out instead.....just couldn't bring myself to do that!!

They make special sockets for just this purpose. A good tire shop should be able to zip them right off.
