Default 1993 water pump

Hi guys,

I found a beautiful '93 convertible with only 34k miles. It looks brand new. ALL the fluids have been recently changed. My question is, what is your opinion about doing some preventative maintenance? Mainly thinking about the water pump. If it goes, there goes the Opti-Spark. I know it sounds like I've already talked myself into it, but would just like some expert opinions. I've owned a C4 before, but it was a '90 ZR1, so this ia a different ballgame.

Depends. Is there any sign of leaking at the weep hole at the bottom of the pump? If all looks and sounds good, then IMHO I'd leave it alone.

Thanks, it's just that our club is planning a day trip in April & I was thinking better safe than sorry. I'm just remembering an Olds I inherited from my father 25 years ago. He hardly drove that car and everything seemed to check out OK before I drove it home (1100 miles). Fortunately, I made it all the way home. The next day there was a puddle of coolant under the car. You know what happened.

Put it on a lift and have a thorough inspection before throwing money at it....

Just put a new pump in my 93, 65k. Bearing in pump behind coupler was bad. Also replaced the seal on the timing cover. Purchased a ACDelco Pro water pump, didn't fit. Went to my local NAPA store $116 with a lifetime warranty fit great. Hard part was getting the old gasket material off, otherwise not that difficult.

If you decide to put on a new pump. Do yourself a favor and alter the pump at the weep hole. You can find a brass fitting (used for small diameter hose) that you can epoxy into the hole. Then run a plastic tube from this fitting down past the OPTI and use zip ties to keep in place.

Do you know if it had ever been replaced before?

Sounds like a wise thing to do!

I just had my water pump/opti replaced last summer ('94/45K miles). The car was starting to act up a bit at low speeds, so it was definitely time. It's a hassle but the car felt like new afterwards.

if its not broke dont break it by replacing it...

Why?

The new ones are made in china (even though you still pay top dollar and it says ac delco)

Get your old one rebuilt in the usa (someone on here has contact info for someone that does 'em)

I do agree with the weep hole vent...vent the weep hole away from the opti for if it does go bad

No, it was the stock one. I also replaced the distributor cap and rotor with a MDS kit, the kit has a venting system, which the stock one does not have. Replacing all the cooling hoses today and get her back on the road.
