Depends on the degreaser. I heard that some degreasers could damage your springs. Could be wrong though.

I agree with this. Some bottles even say "don't spray on rubber or plastic parts". If I were you I would protect the rear spring very well before starting just to be on the safe side. It could be dangerous and expensive to damage it in any way.
BTW...this also goes with exhaust installation...it is very easy to overheat the spring if it is welded together. Most muffler shops don't realise the spring is composite and they are not carefull enough under there.
