90coupe, 86 vert, 84 beater truck . all on R 12....Been doing the math , to change just the vette's over to 134 (flush, new "o" rings, hoses, aculumator????, draw down the system....Like to keep 'em stock...I am a card holder for HVAC.....Here I come Fleabay....Going to eat hotdogs for a month paying for somebody's lucky find.....
The two different types of oil are not compatible. Searching the old threads, I gather, To do it right, you have to flush the system, change the accumulator/ drier, meaning you have to break open the system. You can reuse the old "o" rings an hoses, but they will leak. Don't want to throw a quick fix to it, Then the compressor locks up snapping my belt an me sittin by the road. The "Freeze 12" they sell on fleabay is propane based. Don't really like the thought of that under a fiberglass hood. Thanks

Ive done honestly over 100 of them and no you don't have to change it out. Kit works fine.
The whatever/12 alternatives normally are very flammable and quite dangerous. They do work but so does playing Russian roulette.
Oh and notice I said "CONVERSION KIT" and not just put Freon in it.
The kit comes with the oil additive in the Freon to convert it over and not eat the system up. If you just put regular 134a in there it will damage the system. Once the kits been used you can use cans of regular 134a if you need to top it off later on.
I switched to R134A and all I did was buy the little screw on connectors, vacuum the system and fill it up with the new refrigerant. Works fine. I talked to a A/C guy who said he's done 100's like that and anyone telling you, you can't is just splitting hairs
Keep in mind that the earlier cars (like before 1988) don't have a "barrier" lining in the hoses and the R-134a will leak out much faster than a proper hose (the molecules are smaller than R-12).
Thank you Cliff, Your old posts are the ones I was looking at. I'm going to bite the bullet an see if I can get a couple of small cans of R12 to get me through the summer. Then redo the system over winter on the 86 Vert. Just can't handle the heat like I used to. Hot day, sitting in garage on rocking chair, adult beverage, watching the grass grow...lol Thank you

An interesting thing has happened in regard to R-12. When it was first banned a lot of people started hoarding cans of R-12. Now that most cars run R-134a or have been converted to R-134a, these guys are "stuck" with R-12 that nobody wants. The prices have come WAY down.
