I have a 91 that i purchased to restore. The car had bad head gaskets and i would prefer to rebuild the engine rather than chance running with the bearings that are in the car. I found a 91 being parted out on Craigslist. For a~50k motor what do you think it's worth. I thought it would be nice to drop something in while i rebuild the original.

He said he's rebuilding and wants to put in an engine while rebuilding.

$750-$1200

but I'd want to see it being run on a stand.

Engines from private parties have a element of risk, generally " as is" I wouldn't want to have more than 750.00 in it. Would pay 1200 to 1500 with a warranty in writing. I would also want to inspect bottom end prior to taking it. You have to have the money when you show up. If not it sours the deal.

I just wanted to throw a cheap motor i while I rebuild. Rebuilding gets out of control really quickly. Motor is so annoying to remove that you might as well make sure it is perfect line bore, home ect. Then I might as well buy forged pistons for durability and if you have forged pistons you don't want to use the factory rods so now it's forged pistons and a set of 1000 dollar Oliver rods. Forged pistons and rods then you need a cam which requires a tune. You get a cam you need an exhaust. It just never ends and costs a fortune and takes a year.

a realist. i like the way you think.

i think your plan is a good one. running the temp engine on a stand, starting from COLD so you can see if valve are shot, with a stethescope and a compression tester should tell you if the engine is shot.

swapping in a used engine gives you the best of both worlds. You can drive and work on the other engine as time, money and the "wanna do it" comes in line.
