I have a 1990 vette, my dash lights go out at night, I can read it during the day but not at night. I shinned a light on the SENSOR and they get bright take the light away and they go dark. what do I need to do, I am new at this and don't understand a lot but I am slowly learning.
The design changed in 1990 so I don't know exactly how yours works. On the earlier cars there is a connection between the headlight switch and the dash to tell it when the parking or headlights are on. That puts the dash in "dim" mode (it doesn't have to be very bright at night). The brightness is controlled by the headlight switch. Are you sure you don't have the back lights turned off by the headlight switch?
The dash goes into "bright" mode when the photocell detects high ambient light.
