I finally decided to try and modify the center console since I don't smoke anymore. I am making a plastic plate to cover the cupholder and ashtray. This is just a rough protoytpe, just to get an idea how I need to make the final cover. The finished piece will have the textured side up and possibly trimmed back just enough to cover the cupholder as to leave the cigarette plug. The 3rd photo are the usb plugs I ordered for it.
I was to mess with it more today and Im starting to think that may not be a good spot, slight depth problem. I was going to install a double din stereo since I dont like the Sony that came with the car but Im on the fence about that now. If I install a single din unit then I could install the usb ports right under it. Any thoughts?
I decided to stick with the original plan after I realized I still had more plastic to more for the clearance I needed. The door closes completely with the plug caps on. Pictures are of the prototype. Just need to make the final version, decide whether I want one, both or neither switched and hook power to it.
Why not get a double din with USB's on it. That's what I installed in my 94. It's only one port at 1A but that's all I need for my phone. I keep a second cigarette charger in the rear storage for passengers, but that's rare since I only keep one seat in my car anymore.
I have other items than my phone that charges by usb that the reason I wanted more than one outlet. Since I dont intend to smoke in the car or have a drink in I decided to go this route. In the end I could not get the door closed completely with the plug covers on so I won't be using them. Here is the final product without power ran to it yet. I will do that when I run the wires for my new stereo system.
