Has a read out for a couple seconds upon starting but then just reads zero.
Changed tach filter and didn't help. Suggestions Please?
And I don't recall the year of your car. I'd use a scanner and check at the ALDL maybe for the first check. The couple second intermittent is I'd say something of an unusual. An '89 or earlier maybe the intermittent isn't that uncommon.
Is the filter you used new or a used part? If an early car is it the graph or the digital display, maybe both that have the same intermittent?

I have an 85. Both displays read zero. The filter was a new one given to me by a member

I've no idea how I overlooked the "1985 Original Owner" tag because I look to the left always. There's one go to guy where you need to take your question. I'd confirm the ALDL output with a scanner and then make request to BATEE ...
The FSM of course has only a single test for the tach, if it doesn't pass the 54MPH test (best I recall), you replace cluster.
my tach does nothing, need to find a video or step by step written post on fixes. Thanks
Your '90 is a different arrangement and I'd suggest some searches for '90 tach issues. This thread will NOT help you at all.

Surely you know someone that can check for you. I'm guessing you have several acquaintances that could accommodate you. How about an old tach/dwell meter? If yes I'd maybe check beyond the filter BUT the intermittent if it's a consistent error certainly hints cluster. A call to/email to BATEE I'd say is inevitable.
