Default 94 a/c issue

My 1994 with manual a/c just crapped out all of a sudden. I used just a little heat last Saturday night, and flipped it back to cool today for the first time. Nothing but warm air. Leads me to think it's not a leak, since it's worked fine up until now. Any ideas or leads would be appreciated; I'm a bit of a newbie to the C4 world. And to think one reason I picked this car was because of the manual air; figured there would be less headaches to deal with. So much for that line of reasoning, lol.

ANY HVAC issue will more than likely NOT be a home remedy fix.

Not really familiar with manual a/c, but the basic premise for cooling air is the same for all a/c. First, as already pointed out, make sure the compressor clutch is energizing. Going from heat to a/c and a/c suddenly not working makes me think there may be an issue with the controller.

My 94 did the same thing! I found that the shrader valve to the inlet port had failed, causing a sudden and massive leak of freon. It simply worked one day and not the next. I was able to buy a replacement valve stem at the auto parts store ($4) and unscrewed/screwed the new one in, then filled it with R-134. System is ice cold now!

To find out if your valve is bad, buy a can of R-134, attach it to the port and press the trigger. When you remove it from the valve, if it is free flowing out, you know you have a bad valve. Hope it helps. Worth a shot to find out.

I'm going to look more in depth when we get back from vacation in a couple weeks. Think it may be electrical as well; the compressor doesn't feel like it's kicking in.

Note that you can test the A/C compressor clutch when the engine is not running. It makes a loud click when it engages so it will be easy to tell when that happens.

I would start with the low pressure switch. Unplug the connector and jumper the contacts in the connector. The compressor should engage when you do that.

Well, the clutch isn't kicking in to the compressor. I'm hoping it might be a switch or something, since it was cooling up until the past few days. I think it rules out a stuck door in the dash as well.

Is that the one in the bigger diameter line? Just unplug it, and put a piece of wire from one terminal to the other in the plug?

when your in there take the caps off and put some spit in the valves and look for bubbles the shrader valves can leak. you can get a tool to replace them without loosing the freon or get new caps that will seal better.

On early cars the A/C fuse is for the compressor. You should have something similar.

I checked the fuses on the right side of the instrument panel by the door. According to the sticker inside the lid, a 10 amp fuse was for the A/C, and it was good.

Checked it today by jumping the connector that hooks to the low pressure switch. When I did that, the compressor kicked on when I started the car and turned it on. However, the air never got cold. Does this indicate a leak AND a bad switch as well?
