Default Ride Control

Will be replacing the suspension bushings soon and was wondering if I should replace the ride control shocks with regular shocks and be done with it? It seems to ride the same no matter what I select. Anything?

What year car is it??

If you're talking about the FX3 Blistiens (sp?) ride control, the actuators and shocks are a sought-after system, especially by the ZR-1 community. The shocks can be re-firbished, IIRC, and the actuators can be too. So, if you do replace them with standard shocks, don't throw the FX3 stuff away!

BTW, the FX3 system is somewhat subtle, especially on smooth roads and low speeds. But, on 'less than perfect' roads, and especially at speed, the system is designed to react accordingly. Then the difference - especially from TOUR and PERF settings - is very distinct (or at least mine is!)

Paul.

Sorry, it's a 92. Maybe I should leave them on then, just expecting too much from them maybe? The fronts look like they have leaked a bit so was thinking of just replacing them with less expensive since I never felt any difference with any of the settings. Can buy parts for these anywhere? I have looked and can't seem to find much.

The actuators can be rebuilt as can the shocks. Here's a link for one actuator rebuild service -

Here's a link showing Bilsteins prices for shock rebuild services -

Their order form with the telephone number to call -

Here's a link for new shocks -

Your shocks and maybe your actuators are not operating correctly. I would have both the actuators and shocks rebuilt. When working correctly it is a nice option to have on the car. Plus it was a large selling point when C4s were being built and driven.

If you search, most of the major Corvette vendors usually have the shocks and/or actuators also.

You can do it piecemeal. One or two actuators or shocks at a time or one corner at a time until it's finished. I think it's worthwhile to try to keep a system like the FX3 functioning. It's part of the "cool" factor of these old C4s.

Whatever you decide, good luck to you and the car.

I have had my 2 driver side actuators rebuilt by Captain Z and am happy with the quick service and the parts they replaced. Too bad they didn't come this way from the factory.
In the future if you are selling your car, the FX system may be a good selling feature.
Tip, the rear actuators are actually in the frame but are very easy to take out by carefully removing the shock absorber.

Thanks for the input everyone!
I'd like to save it but the car is only a good ten footer. Drive it daily when I can. Can I buy the parts to rebuild them myself? I bought the three FSM books and from what I have read I can troubleshoot the system. I will have to check it when I get the books. Also, I guess there is supposed to be a system check light at startup. I don't think I have seen it come on. Can someone post a picture? Maybe a bulb is out.
